On a damp and dreary day, a squad of eight Tullamore Harriers athletes and one Ferbane AC athlete, representing club and county, headed to Adamstown, Co Wexford for the National Novice cross country championships.

On a relatively fast and flat course and out of a line up of approx 190 runners, the first finisher was Liam Brady who positioned with the leading group from the start of the 6k course. He fell back to 14th position going into the second lap but showing true strength and determination, he exploded his way back to the fore and was narrowly beaten into 4th position by the eventual bronze medallist by a mere two seconds.

Next was Declan Fahey who too put on a splendid show, and gradually worked his way through the troupe to finish in 19th place. He was followed by Paul Buckley who had his usual steady run to finish in 30th place earning valuable points for the county team. Catch Grennan and John Harkin put on noteworthy performances, especially in the last lap, steadily working their way and passing many athletes. Next for Tullamore and Offaly was, Dave Fox who seems to be getting stronger with each race, followed by solid runs by Eddie Garry, Dave Brophy and Brendan Abbott.

The men should be proud of their efforts and were rewarded by winning bronze county medals and narrowly missing out on the same for their club (on a count back), thus finishing 4th club. Well done to all on this commendable result at national level.

Overall times; Liam Brady 19.57, Declan Fahy 20.37, Paul Buckley 20.56, Catch Grennan 21.10, John Harkin 21.22, Dave Fox 21.31, Eddie Garry 23.11, David Brophy 23.43, Brendan Abbott 24.01.
