The competition brought out the highest turnout this year so far with some fantastic shooting from repeat winners John O’Shea and Brian Dolan. John and Brian were the county champions in the Holmpatrick Cup in 2005. Michael Egan and Gerry McCarthy were unlucky to miss out on the prizes with an excellent 44 pts.

Club History: The hard work over almost two years by the History Committee will come to fruition at the presentation on Sunday evening with the official launch of the history of Tullamore Golf Club. Golf has been played in the Tullamore area since 1886 and the Tullamore Club came into existence in 1896. Although it is usual for a Club to complete its History for its centenary year, this did not happen in 1996, however this has now been rectified and the publication is eagerly awaited. All are welcome to attend Sunday evening to mark this significant occasion and copied will be available for sale at €25.
THE St Patrick’s Day Open Four Person Scramble generously sponsored by EK Tyres, Eugene and Carmel Kearney, was very well supported with over two hundred and fifty competitors taking part, and with the gorgeous spring weather, the golf course in excellent condition all entrants had an enjoyable day on the golf course and a pleasurable evening in the club house with excellent food from cordon bleu chefs Michael and Eileen McDonnell. Well done to everybody.
First prize was won in great style by John Sheehan, Tom O’Halloran, Denis Breen and Val Costello with a wonderful score of 51.4 just outdoing Sean Murray, Margaret Murray, Pauline Holton and Dermot Bergin who carded 52.00.

The Oakwood Inn Club Singles most kindly sponsored by long standing and generous sponsor Eugene and Monica Byrne, was played on Saturday and Sunday last. The turnout of members for this competition was exceptionally high and we wish to thank our members for their continued support of the club competitions. First prize went to Dublin golfer Darren Mulready with an excellent score of 40 points. Class A went to PJ Townsend also on 40 points with Class B going to JA Kelly on 38 points. Naas golfer Gerry Byrne took Class C also with 40 points and Class D was won by John O’Hare

The first presentation evening of the new golfing season will take place on Saturday evening next March 26 at 8pm sharp. The prizes for the Pro-Vend Cross Entry Fourball, the St Patrick’s Day Open Four Person Scramble and the Oakwood Inn Single Stableford Competition will be presented. All prize winners are requested to attend.

Edenderry Golf Club and Moyvalley Golf and Country Club played their preliminary round of the prestigious FBD Barton Cup inter club competition on Sunday last with Edenderry starting out with a distant disadvantage having to play three of the five matches away.
Edenderry gave a very spirited performance with some notable performances; however the disadvantage of playing three matches away proved too big a burden with Edenderry going down by three matches to two matches. Congratulations to Moyvalley and well done.

THE final of the Martin’s Golf sponsored Winter League were played on Sunday. In the final, teams captained by Dan Cunningham & Mick Lennon went into battle and after a titanic struggle on the front nine Dan’s team had a slender lead. Mick Lennon’s team battled hard on the back nine to try and turn the match around, but Dan Cunningham’s team were solid and held on to take a well deserved victory. Well done to all who participated and organizsd this years Winter League competition, it has been a great success.
The winners and runners up of the Winter League Final will be presented next Sunday, March 27 at 5.30pm sharp.
Single Stableford: Scoring was again of a high standard at Sunday’s members competition. Winner on the day and keeping the O’Meara’s winning streak still going with a great score of 43pts was Michael O’Meara. Category 1 was won by John Fagan with 40pts. Category 2 winner Stephen Brennan 41pts. Category 3 winner Martin Furlong 42pts. Cat 4 winner Dave Berry 41pts. Junior section winner Conor Casey 42pts.
St Patrick’s Day: Last week’s Thursday Open was very well attended. Ronan Connelly (11) Heath GC brought in a superb score of 45pts and only just clinched it on the back 9. 2nd Conor Casey 45pts, 3rd Stephen Brennan 43pts, 4th Lee O’ Meara 41pts, 5th Anthony Marsh 41pts, 6th Sean Doyle 40pts.
The Tuesday Senior Open was again very well supported with the ever green Mick Lennon winning with a score of 37pts followed closely by the ever greener Haul Malone with 36 pts.
The 2 ball scramble was won by Noel Harte and Margaret Harte a strong husband and wife combination.
Junior: A few details on the outing to Mullingar arranged by our Captain Kieran McGurran for our Fred Daly panel. Eight juniors took part E Mahon, R Coffey, S Lynch, S Daly, C Casey, D Molloy, L O’Meara, D Brazil. Kieran put up a beautiful piece of Galway crystal for the winner inscribed Away Outing which was won by Richard Coffey with a fine score of 39pts on the day and it was Richard’s 18th birthday as well. The juniors played along side some of the seniors who helped out on the day - captain Kieran McGurran, Vice captain Anthony Lynch, Sec Brian McCormack, John M Lynch - Jimmy Slattery - Liam Scally and Martin Furlong. The seniors had a small consideration at the request of past captain Liam Scally €5 a head was the damage and it was John M Lynch who took the money with a score of 36pts. Many thanks must go to Kieran for organising the day a great occasion for the juniors a good team building event which was enjoyed by all.

MEMBERS Scotch Foursomes: The members enjoyed a change from the singles format on Sunday last when they teed up to play Scotch Foursomes. Team managers were notably on hand with the scoring perused in great detail as the searched for potential pairings in the up and coming inter club competitions. Conditions were excellent and the course was in top order allowing members display the best of their talents. Scoring was of a high caliber with Paul Rudge and Ross Scanlon returning a tally of 45 points to take first place by one shot over Con Finnerty and Matt Murphy. Frank Ryan and Dan Hackett were one shot back to claim third spot with 43 points.
This year’s weekend away is almost upon us and those wishing to travel on April 8 are reminded that deposits are now due. Hon Secretary Liam Boland has an excellent weekend planed for those traveling to the sunny south east.
This year’s Captains Drive In takes place on Sunday, March 27 and is a must for every members diary as Captains Sean and Vivienne have a great day planned. All members are welcome on the day so please attend.
SUNDAY sees the first of the Captain’s medals for the 2011 season. Bernard Kennedy, last year’s Captain, introduced this interesting competition. It proved very popular with the members and this year’s Captain Joe Slevin is continuing with the innovation. The presentation of the League and outstanding nine hole competitions took place on Saturday evening. The Pitch & Putt season in the midlands officially tees-off this coming weekend with the Jack McCormack Memorial Westmeath Classic on Sunday, March 27 at Kilbeggan Pitch & Putt Club (Play commences at 8am and last card is at 2.30pm.).
This event is quickly followed by our own prestigious Offaly Co. Board Scratch Cup on Sunday, April 3 which is hosted by Tullamore Pitch & Putt Club. The title was won by Erry’s William Buckley last year in which was a record breaking attendance of over 120 players for the event. Play commences at 9am and the last card is at 1.30pm with the play-off scheduled for 5pm. All registered PPUI members are very welcome!
