Offaly golfer Shane Lowry has been forced to pull out of the end of season European PGA Tour event in Dubai due to illness.

The Clara native has been in a rich vein of form of late and a strong finish in the DP World Tour Event, where he finished eighth last year, would have seen him potentially break into the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings. The top 50 at the end of the year earn an automatic invite to the prestigious US Masters in Augusta but it now looks as if Lowry will miss out on that.

It also means he will miss out on breaking the €1,000,000 mark for winnings in the year. To date in 2012 he has won €996,540 bringing his career winning since he turned professional in 2009 to €2,407,889.

He has been in fine form of late and recently won the Portugal Masters as well as finishing fifth at the BMW Masters in Shanghai.

He became sick and dehydrated earlier in the week and despite a stay in hospital, he was unable to take his place on the first tee.

“Obviously I’m gutted,” he commented. “It’s such a big week and a great event, but given the way I feel right now there’s just no way I could have played. I honestly couldn’t even stand up on the tee, never mind play 18 holes.”
