A superb eagle on his final hole has kept Shane Lowry right in contention on five under par going into the weekend at the Dubai World Championship presented by DP World.
He went into the round on -3 and three early birdies had him up to joint fourth and within two shots of the then leader. However four dropped shots and one birdie from the 9th to the 16th saw him drop back into the pack but he jumped back into the top ten with a tremendous three on the par 5 18th. He chipped in from the edge of the 18th for the first eagle of the week on the hole to great heers from the large gallery around the hole.
Clubhouse leader in the 60 man event after a stunning round of eight under par 64 is Alvaro Quiros on -12 for the tournament. Overnight leader Peter Hanson is second four shots back on eight under closely followed by Rory Mcilroy and Robert Rock as shot further back.
McIlroy needs to win and have Luke Donald finish lower than ninth to claim top spot on the European Order of Merit.
Of the other Irish golfers, Graeme McDowell is -2 after two rounds, Michael Hoey is +3, Darren Clarke is +4 while Peter Lawrie is +5
