THE second leg of the National Track and Field league took place in Athlone last Sunday with our women and men’s teams having it all to do in order to qualify for the finals to be held in Tullamore next month.

With the top eight teams going through to the finals, it proved to be a disappointing day for the club with our Women’s team finishing in ninth place and our men having to settle for tenth place. Every athlete gave their all on the day but ultimately could not overcome the handicap of been short some athletes through injury and other commitments.

On a damp windy day, the weather conditions were more akin to what would be experienced in the cross country season. There were however some good performances on the day. Stephen Kelly equalled his own club record when he cleared 3.40 on his way to victory in the Pole Vault. Lauren Dunne had a great win in the 200 metres in a time of 28.30. Gordon Kennedy was second in the 200 metres in 22.53 and helped the 4x100 metre relay team to second place also. Laura Dolan also had a second place finish in the Javelin with a throw of 28.60 metres.
