Two birdies on his final two holes have left Shane Lowry well placed going into the weekend at the Irish Open at Carton House.

After an up and down round, the Offaly golfer birdied 17 and 18 to finish with a two under par 70 which leaves him on seven under for the tournament, two shots adrift of joint leaders American Peter Uihlein and Englishman Robert Rock.

Lowry started the day with a bogey on the first and he dropped to two over with another bogey on the third. However he got back to one over for the round by the turn and he came home strongyl with birdies on 10, 13, 17 and 18 while dropping just one shot on the 14th to leave himself well placed.

While Lowry is right in contention, his playing partner and World Number 2 Rory McIlroy will miss the cut as he finished on two over after his first two rounds.
