open eir deploys world class fibre broadband infrastructure at this year’s National Ploughing Championships

Major preparatory work has been underway for the past number of weeks in advance of this year’s 85th National Ploughing Championships taking place in Screggan, Tullamore, Co. Offaly.

This is one of Europe’s biggest outdoor events and a significant technical undertaking.  Last year 281,000 visitors attended the event over 3 days and this year there will be a record 1,700 exhibitors.

open eir, the official communications partner of the National Ploughing Championships,  has had technical teams on site in Screggan in recent weeks working closely with the National Ploughing Association to deploy the very latest in broadband infrastructure at the event.  A team comprising network planners, engineers and field technicians has been working to roll out 10 kilometres of fibre which will provide a world class broadband experience for both visitors and exhibitors alike.

open eir has confirmed that Screggan and the nearby village of Rahan will be broadband enabled with speeds up to 100Mb/s available to approximately 300 homes and businesses. In addition, 111 premises located on the route from Screggan to the National Ploughing Championships will be enabled with FTTH (fibre to the home) technology, providing speeds of up to 1Gb/s.  These speeds are the fastest available in Ireland and comparable with the best broadband speeds available in Europe.

Orlagh Nevin, Commercial Director at open eir outlined the scale of the preparatory work involved and the additional benefits to the local community.  “In order to ensure the best visitor and exhibitor experience at the National Ploughing Championships, not only have we rolled out the most up to date high speed fibre broadband infrastructure for the duration  of the National Ploughing Championships, but we have ensured a long term benefit for local residents, who up to now have had limited broadband connectivity.

“These homes and businesses will be able to take advantage of all the benefits that high-speed connectivity provides – whether it be working from home or allowing families use multiple devices to enjoy superfast movie and music streaming at home. open eir understand the importance of rolling out high speed broadband throughout Ireland for families, for education, for farming and non farming businesses and the benefits it brings in terms of employment and quality of life.”

open eir has already invested €400 million in high speed broadband, the largest telecoms investment of its kind in Ireland.  1.6 million homes and businesses now having access to high-speed fibre broadband. open eir has a proven track record in delivering quality broadband at scale, at pace and ahead of schedule and no  other operator is investing more in broadband rollout throughout the country.  The company has also committed to provide FTTH to an additional 300,000 homes and businesses before 2020.

Once complete, 1.9 million premises will be on the open eir high speed network, the remaining 450,000 will be part of the Government’s National Broadband Plan tender.
