OFFALY golfer Shane Lowry has continued his recent rich vein of form at the first round of the World Golf Championship – HSBC Champions event at Mission Hills in China.
Fresh from his win at the Portugal Masters and a fifth place finish at the BMW Masters last weekend, the Clara native is in illustrious company in a tie for third place at the WGC event after shooting an opening round of six under par 66.
He is in a group of four players just one shot behind joint leaders Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott.
Also joining Lowry on six under par are American Ryder Cup stars Phil Mickleson and Bubba Watson and Peter hanson, winner of last weekend’s BMW Masters and a member of the European Ryder Cup team.
Lowry had eight birdies and two bogeys in his round which puts him in with the best in the world going into his second round.
Last week’s result jumped him up to 21st on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai and also moved him up to 57th in the Official World Golf Rankings making him the top ranked Republic of Ireland golfer ahead of Padraig Harrington.
