Weekend long fundraiser planned for Walsh Island

PLANS are well underway for a charity fundraiser on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18 in Walsh Island.

Funds raised from the large scale event will go to the Marie Keating Foundation and a number of activities on the Saturday and Sunday are planned.

These activities are primarily to raise funds for the charity but they will also provide a great spectacle and plenty of fun for all ages.

Saturday kicks off the schedule with a sponsored walk which has been called 'Hike d Pike'. Currently in excess of 40 women (and some men) bearing the Marie Keating T shirts and largely in pink are signed up. These will tackle the five mile plus trek. Accompanying them for some of the way is a Bed Push with five per bed and so far three teams have volunteered.

Some men folk left behind should be preparing some nourishment at The Hoppers which will be served upon their return.

That night features a 'pink karaoke' and it is hoped to also have a raffle or an auction.

Anyone wishing to participate in the walk please contact Madeleine Flint for further details. Also one more Bed Push team would be ideal and anyone interested should contact Paul Flint as soon as possible.

On Sunday there will be the first ever 'Live Pig Racing' in Walsh Island. There will be a total of six races with six pigs in each.

There will be simple betting to add to the excitement and the Irish Parachute Club will drop in. The parachutist’s will collect prize winning names scattered on the landing site.

Prizes already confirmed are a Helicopter Ride around the parish, two night break in Westport and cases of wine. More items are still being planned and all donations for prizes for this or for the raffle will be greatly appreciated.

Pigs, jockeys and trainers are also available for sponsorship. There are advertising slots available in the Race Brochure too and any offers of general help would be much appreciated

For further details contact Paul Flint on 0860572213 or Madeleine Flint on 086 0674549.
