MOTHER Nature was kind last Saturday evening for the Corpus Christi procession and the Eucharistic Congress celebratory Mass in O’Connor Park, Tullamore.

Thousands of people attended both events which aimed to offer parishoners an opportunity to celebrate the occasion of the Eucharistic Congress without having to travel to Dublin.

Estimates that up to 5,000 people attended were possibly “over estimated” according to Parish Priest Mons Sean Heaney, who thought the numbers were more likely to be between 3,500 and 4,000. “The numbers were not important, the event was not organised for that reason. There was a great sense of prayerfullness, everyone who attended participated well. The occasion was meaningful for people.”

Mons Heaney paid tribute to all the organisers from the Eucharistic Ministers to the hundreds of people involved in the advance preparatory work. “That was the lovely thing about the whole occasion - everyone was willing to help out. They were very generous with their time and expertise.

“The whole event was wonderful. I think it captured the atmosphere perfectly. The message that came through afterwards was very positive. We achieved the aim which was to offer an occasion to people who we felt would not be able to travel to Dublin,” added Mons Heaney.

Other parishes in the area were well represented at the open air Mass.

Following the Mass the annual Corpus Christi procession took place moving along the Arden Road, William Street, Bridge Street and then O’Connor Square.
