TD's to take a salary drop

LAOIS/Offaly's five TD's are to be hit with a 13% salary cut, according to a new survey. The Irish Independent survey has revealed TD's throughout the country will see their overall earning fall by an average of €17,000.

The paper also published current basic earnings for the constituencies five deputies.

Obvious front runner was Taoiseach Brian Cowen who gets €228,466. Broken down, Mr Cowen gets €135,794 for his role as Taoiseach and his basic TD salary of €92,672.

Next is Laois Deputy Sean Fleming who earns €107,935, again €92,672 of this is his basic deputy pay and he gets an additional €9,511 for Chairing an Oireacthas Committee and an additional €5,752 for being a TD with over ten years service in the Oireacthas.

Mountmellick Deputy John Moloney earns €139,266, a combination of his Junior Minister's pay of €46,594 and his basic pay.

Deputy Charlie Flanagan earns €98,424, with the additional money coming from the €5,752 he receives for being a serving member of the Oireacthas for over 10 years.

Finally Offaly Deputy Olwyn Enright is on a basic TD's salary of €92,672.

These figures are before any expenses are added such as allowances for offices, phone, travel and subsistence.

The figures also relate to amounts the TD's are entitled to and do not include any voluntary pay cuts.

Few TD's have opted to take a voluntary cut of 5% on top of their 8% pay cut.
