Some Offaly pharmacists will continue to fill prescriptions under the Medical Card Scheme

THE HSE has published on the internet (www.hse.ie) and in national newspapers, a list of the 852 community pharmacists that will continue to fill prescriptions under the Medical Card and other State Drugs Schemes from August 1.

The list excludes the 762 pharmacists who have, up to last Friday (July 24), served the HSE with a valid 30 day written notice of termination of their Community Pharmacy Contractor Agreement and therefore will not be available to dispense medicines under the State Drugs Schemes from August 1.

The list published on the HSE's website (www.hse.ie) will be regularly updated to include pharmacists who withdraw their termination notices before August 1 and will therefore continue to be available to dispense medicines under the State Drugs Schemes. In the region of 70 pharmacists have so far chosen to withdraw their termination notices.

Members of the public will also be able to get updates on the HSE's Infoline 1850 24 1850. County by county lists will be published in regional newspapers over the course of this week.

Kate Mulvenna, HSE Chief Pharmacist (Contracts), commented: "We greatly appreciate the support of the community pharmacists and particularly those who will continue to fill prescriptions and provide services under the State Drugs Schemes from 1st August.

"Our advice to people who are concerned about where they can get their medications is to check the list published in the national and local newspapers. If your usual pharmacy is not included on this list, you should identify the next most convenient pharmacy.

"If your usual pharmacists will not be able to fill your prescription from 1st August, ask for any prescriptions they may have been holding for you and take these to a participating pharmacy.

"Given the even spread of participating pharmacies across the country, nobody should be too far from a pharmacy that will be open for State Drugs Scheme business. While there may be inconvenience for some, people should be reassured by the fact that up to a few years ago, and for more than 30 years before that, the country was well served by around 1,100 pharmacies.

The HSE has asked pharmacists who have chosen to terminate their contract to assist in ensuring minimal disruption to their patients and clients by providing relevant prescription records, on request by clients. The HSE has also asked that pharmacists inform their local HSE pharmacist of patients who may need extra supports.

Earlier this month the HSE wrote to all Pharmacy Contractors who had indicated to the HSE that they wished to terminate their Community Pharmacy Contractor Agreement. The HSE appealed to them to reconsider their decision, continue to provide services and fill prescriptions under the various State Drugs Schemes.
