Parental vigilance urged on school runs

TULLAMORE Town Cllr Sinead Dooley has emphasised that there is a responsibility on all parents to be more vigilant which dropping their children off at school.

“It is nothing short of negligent when parents stop in the middle of the roadway to let their children exit the car and children then dash across the road in front of oncoming cars. This is something which I have regularly witnessed and it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs, so I am pleading with parents to be extra careful at busy times, use the set down area for that purpose and keep your children safe,” said Cllr Dooley.

Tullamore Town Council has installed new road markings outside St Philomena's National School on Convent Road in an effort to make that area safer for students.

Cllr Sinead Dooley said that this is one of a number of measures which she and other members have been calling on the council to provide for quite some time.

“We decided to put forward a submission to the consultants who are preparing the Transportation Study for the council at the moment outlining our concerns and the parents gathered signatures from all householders in the vicinity supporting our request for pedestrian crossings, a set-down area outside the school and a review of traffic management in general on Convent Road,” said Cllr Dooley.

She said the road markings and signs which have recently been installed are only a small step in the right direction to make this road safer for pupils, and she will continue to push for safe crossings also.

Meanwhile she has also welcomed the recent installation of lighting at the Arden junction off the by-Pass.

"This junction has been a cause of concern to road-users since the by-pass opened and a number of minor accidents occurred there last year. These lights will be a massive improvement for motorists and hopefully will prevent a more serious incident,” said Cllr Dooley.
