Offaly musician is Eurovision bound

AN Offaly musician will accompany her famous cousin at the Eurovision Song Contest next May. Niamh Kavanagh, daughter of Noel and Joan Kavanagh, The Island, will play the silver whistle as her cousin, former Eurovision winner Niamh Kavanagh sings Ireland's entry 'It's For You'.

Niamh's performance topped both the public televote and regional jury vote, on RTE's Late Late Show.

The song beat off stiff competition from four other songs, including one written by Boyzone's Michael Graham, to be selected to represent the country in Oslo. Ireland will have to make it through the semi-finals on Thursday, May 27 to compete in the final of the 55th Eurovision Song Contest on May 29.

Niamh Kavanagh won the competition for Ireland in Millstreet in 1993 with 'In Your Eyes'.
