Offaly man extradited

A SHANNONBRIDGE man who returned home while on trial in England has been extradited back to face charges.

Oliver Coleman from Shannonbridge will stand trial in connection with an attack on Hugh Raymond O’Gorman in Leeds which ultimately led to his death.

Mr Coleman is alleged to have attacked Mr O’Gorman on June 9, 1989 in Leeds, after which Mr O’Gorman never regained consciousness and died on October 16, 1989.

Mr Coleman was due to stand trial but skipped bail and came back to Ireland.

Extradition proceedings began in 1999 and in November 2003 Mr Coleman challenged his surrender to British authorities but lost at the Supreme Court.

He received a twelve year sentence for the manslaughter of Michael Rosney at a party in Belmont. Mr Coleman shot Mr Rosney but a jury cleared him of murder.

He has only served seven years of this sentence and Garda say he has been flown back to the UK to face charges twenty years after he was originally meant to.
