Offaly to highlight Elder Abuse
Elder abuse is the least talked about abusive behaviors and can be very difficult to identify.
So Thursday June 14 has been designated Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The HSE Has noted a 9 per cent increase in the number of elder abuse referrals it received last year. A total of 2,302 referrals of elder abuse were received by the service in 2011, an increase of 9 per cent from 2010, according the HSE’s Elder Abuse Report 2011.
Elder abuse is defined as the physical psychological or financial mistreatment of an older person by an individual, who has a relationship with them. The abuse is a violation of a person’s human and civil rights causing distress. Abuse can be broken down into psychological abuse, neglect, financial or material abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and discrimination. If you are a victim of Elder Abuse, or you are concerned about abuse, or if you suspect someone you know may be a victim of abuse, contact ODVSS on 0579351886 confidential line or you should contact the HSE elder abuse service, through your GP, Public Health Nurse, local Health Centre or any of your local Senior Case Worker. The HSE has a dedicated Elder Abuse Service, with Senior Case Workers in Elder Abuse now working in most Local Health Office Areas.
