Offaly libraries celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge

OFFALY Library Services have a number of exciting projects organised for Seachtain na Gaeilge, which continues until next Wednesday, March 17.

Seachtain na Gaeilge was established in 1902 by Conradh na Gaeilge and is a non-profit organisation. It promotes the use of Irish language and culture both at home and abroad within a two-week festival held in March every year.

With events ranging from crosswords and word searches in Irish to a friendly Cad mle filte in the library; it gives everyone a chance to rekindle their Irish whether fluent from youth or only dipping their toe in for the first time.

All branch libraries in Offaly County Library Service including Banagher, Birr, Clara, Dainegan, Edenderry, Ferbane, Kilcormac, and Tullamore will have a number of events taking place during this period.

These include book displays of Irish books and Irish authors, both fiction and non-fiction, word searches and puzzles as Gaeilge, crossword puzzles as Gaeilge, an Irish Quiz of 20 questions on Irish culture, colouring pages of St Patrick for younger members, a list of phrases in Irish- Dirt cpla focail, bilingual signs and shelf guiding in all library branches and Ceann eile as Gaeilge campaign to encourage all borrowers to take an extra book home from the Irish collection.

There are also a number of local events to appeal to adults and children alike, such as a cultural exhibition from a history of club hurling in Birr by 6th class from St Brendan’s National School to Arts & Crafts in Edenderry library. Don’t forget to bring the children to the various story times sessions in Tullamore and Edenderry library.
