No progress on Arts Centre

MEMBERS of the community and artist groups are growing increasingly concerned regarding the provision of a Community Arts Centre for Tullamore.

Chairperson of the Phoenix Arts Festival Loughnan Hooper said at a public meeting in front of hundreds of attendees last March, Cllr Barry Cowen stated that the n2 million earmarked for the development had been ringfenced for the project and would be available until the end of 2010. The steering group that organised the meeting was given the task of bringing the issue forward with the local authorities and finalising a plan for the realisation of a sustainable community Arts Centre to facilitate the numerous groups and artistic interests in the area.

“We are 11 months on since the public meeting that showed overwhelming local support for a community Arts Centre and there are only 11 months left to show significant progress, before the n2million of funding is to be lost”, commented Loughnan Hooper, Chairperson of the Phoenix Arts Festival.

“The local authorities have managed to let other major funding opportunities go by the wayside in recent times and people are getting increasingly concerned that this crucial asset for the town will not materialise,” he concluded.
