Lough Boora set for wild weekend

Bord na Móna’s Lough Boora Parklands will be bursting with activity this weekend as it hosts BioBlitz 2012 this Friday and Saturday.

BioBlitz involves a huge bio-mapping exercise recording the huge number of plant and animal species in Boora. Alongside the main BioBlitz exercise there also will be two days of special events and activities that the public are being invited to enjoy. Bord na Mona’s Catherine Farrell, is leading the BioBlitz effort commented, “We are hugely excited about this. We have 24 hours to get out into the park and record as many different living species as possible.”

Bioblitz is taking place for the first time in Offaly and will see fifty specialists gather to record all the animal, bird, insect and plant life that Boora has to offer. The teams have one day to record as many species as possible.

Friday, May 18 will see a bat walk and a study of creatures of the night.

Meanwhile Saturday May 19 will include focusing on the dawn chorus, a study of small mammals, moths, fish and a schools wildlife art competition as well as guided nature walks concluding with a final species count announcement.
