Irish Wheelchair Association celebrates 50 years

THIS year marks the 50th anniversary of the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA). The Association was founded in 1960 by a small group of wheelchair users committed to improving the lives of people with physical disabilities in Ireland.

From its modest beginnings in 1960 the Association has grown into a vibrant network of 20,000 members and over 2,000 staff, as well as many dedicated volunteers. The Association is today, as it was in 1960, focused on the needs of the individual and directed by its members.

The 50th celebrations will begin on Friday February 19 (the 50th day of 2010) as IWA birthday parties are held in 50 locations throughout the country. IWA is inviting any members, volunteers or fundraisers who have supported the organisation over the years to attend the events. Members of the local community who turn 50 in 2010 are also invited to join IWA in celebrating its 50th birthday!

Speaking about the occasion, IWA CEO Kathleen McLoughlin said IWA has centres in 68 communities throughout the country.

“I extend an invitation to all the friends and members of IWA to join us in celebrating this important milestone in our history. It will be a very special event and the 50th birthday parties will be held throughout the country, so everyone can join in on the celebrations,” said Ms McLoughlin.

Offaly ROC will host it’s 50th Birthday Party on Friday February 19 in Ballinagar Resource and Outreach Centre. Midlands Radio 3 will host their show from the Centre from 9.30am to 12pm with 50th Celebrations from 3pm to 6pm
