Glitter, glamour and glad rags at annual Dóchas dinner

RECESSION or not the ladies of Tullamore were out in force last Thursday night for the annual Dóchas dinner which is the main fund raiser for the cancer support group. Over 280 women dusted down their party frocks and headed to the Tullamore Court Hotel where they enjoyed a champagne reception, a delicious four course meal and fabulous entertainment.
The theme this year was “Keep it Local” and they did with entertainment during the champagne reception from Paul Skelton and Karen Martin and later Simon Casey and his band had all the ladies a leaping into the wee hours.
Even the meal had a local theme with all the ingredients sourced from local suppliers. As always manager Philip O’Brien and the staff at the Tullamore Court Hotel pulled out all the stops to ensure this was a glittering gala occasion. The hotel was beautifully and tastefully decorated like a winter wonderland.
Organisers-in-chief Mary Cowen and Sheila McDermott were delighted with the turn out especially as they had gone to great lengths to ensure the same high standards as previous years even though they had reduced the price of tickets dramatically from €125 to €85.
Mistress-of-ceremonies Ber Owens also kept matters ticking along efficiently with her famous (and timely) quotes keeping everyone entertained.
The raffle was speedily organised with an impressive array of prizes including numerous works by local artists.
Even the spot prizes were awarded in an extremely orderly fashion which meant that following the wonderful meal it was on to the entertainment with everyone dancing their cares away for a very worthy cause.
