Galaxy of stars for Midlands Astronomy Club Party

AN award winning French astrophotography will be just one of the highlights of the forthcoming COSMOS 2012 Star Party.

Keynote speaker, Thierry Legault, is one of the most influential and recognised astrophotogaphers and he will make a rare appearance in Ireland at the Tullamore event. And, along with many others he will keep people enthralled on various astronomical topics along with exhibitions and displays at the annual event, which takes place at Annaharvey farm from April 13 to April 15 next.

Now in its twentieth year, the event organised by the Midlands Astronomy Club [MAC] attracts amateur astronomers from around the country and caters for enthusiasts from all walks of life and ages.

The level of the lectures is aimed at everyone, from the amateur novice to the serious enthusiast. The programme is broken up by the various displays and exhibits on offer to allow time to unwind or take in new information. The keynote speaker, Thierry Legault, makes a rare appearance in Ireland, and is one of the most influential and recognised astrophotographers in the world.

The speakers’ list with a variety of topics include; Laurence Rigney, Midlands Astronomy Club Friday 8:30pm - “Intelligent Life in the Universe”, Girvan McKay, Midlands Astronomy Club, Saturday 10:15am - “Return To Vostok”; Thierry Legault, French Astrophotographer, Saturday 11:30am - “In Pursuit of Space Ships”; Eamon Ansbro, Kingsland Observatory, Roscommon, Saturday 2:30pm - “Surveying for Edgeworth Kuiper Belt Objects from Ireland”; Dermot Gannon, Midlands Astronomy Club, Sunday 10:45am - “Buran: The Russian Space Shuttle”; Apostolos Christou, Armagh Observatory, Sunday 12:00pm - “Stargazing On Mars”; Kevin Berwick, Dublin, Sunday 2:45pm - “Choosing A Telescope”.

Annaharvey Farm offers everything onsite, from dinner and lunches to observing and the lectures themselves. On Saturday night, there is also the Cosmic Dinner for visitors at an extra cost and there are a limited number of places available. Various telescopes and other pieces of equipment will be on display. On Friday and Saturday nights, weather permitting, these instruments will be put through their paces with an observing session in to the small hours on both nights.

The prices for this year’s event are as follows: €45 (€35 Concession) for a weekend pass, €25 (€20 Concession) for either Saturday or Sunday only, and €5 Friday only. Concession applies to students with VALID ID card, secondary school students, and retired/OAP. Children under 12 are gladly welcomed for free with accompanying adult(s). Complimentary tea/coffee breaks are included Saturday and Sunday. However, lunches and dinner are extra and at the visitors’ discretion.
