Extra funding for water and sewerage
ADDITIONAL funding of €261,000 has been approved for Offaly to assist the local authorities with running costs on their water and sewerage treatment plants.
In announcing the funding Taoiseach Brian Cowen said that this funding comes on top of the n870 million approved nationally from the Local Government Fund general purpose grants which was announced for all local authorities, including those in Offaly, earlier this year.
“My colleague John Gormley, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is releasing a n20.7m tranche of additional funding today and I am pleased that some n261,000 has been earmarked for Offaly,” said Mr Cowen.
Some of this funding is likely to contribute towards the domestic share of local authorities' operation and maintenance costs on recently completed water and wastewater treatment plants while it will also be used to offset sampling costs to establish compliance with drinking water and wastewater effluent standards and licence application fees to the Environmental Protection Agency for wastewater discharges.
The Taoiseach also said that arrangements are underway to process these payments and this should be completed by mid-August.
The news has been welcomed by Cllr Noel Bourke. “Work is taking place on an ongoing basis on improving the running of various treatment plants throughout the county and this extra funding will enhance this work further,” said Cllr Bourke. He said that both water and sewerage treatment plants must operate to specified standards and a strong emphasis is being placed on this throughout County Offaly. He said that Offaly County Council will continue to work to the standards which are deemed appropriate.
