Daingean set for lick of paint

DAINGEAN’s Main Street is to get a make over with a new colour scheme and it marks the start of the town’s rejuvenation plans to encourage tourism and enterprise.
Every householder was asked for their input on the colour scheme project and were given the opportunity to view the proposed scheme at an open evening, organised by the Daingean Development Association (DDA), on Friday last.
According to Gillian Barratt, DDA Secretary, there was a very good attendance with approximately 75% of residents represented and she said a large portion of these showed interest in taking part in the scheme.
The project is being undertaken as part of the Town Regeneration plan, which was put together after the completion of the Daingean survey in May 2011 and it has three stages, the first of which is the rejuvenation of Main Street.
As part of the makeover campaign, the Association’s committee initially approached all residents of Main Street, securing agreement from every household to take part in the colour scheme if it became affordable and fundraising then began in earnest.
The Association then contacted Dulux and asked them if they would consider painting Daingean’s Main Street under their ‘Let’s Colour Ireland’s’ scheme and after some negotiations, a colour consultant will now be provided free of charge along with some specifications and preparation work needed for every house.
Gillian enthused that DDA was delighted with the turnout. “All the residents love the scheme. There were no bright bold colours, everything was in muted shades, suitable for a midlands town.”
Gillian pointed out that this is a once off opportunity, which “should be grabbed with both hands” as she explained that the painting can be done by the residents themselves, by hiring a professional painter or another option will be to avail of volunteers.
It is hoped that as many volunteers as possible will now come on board with the project so it can be carried out at the lowest possible cost.
The Association has confirmed they have already approached several professional painters in the town, who are willing to volunteering their time and will work as team leaders with volunteers. “This scheme as it is a once off opportunity to address the multi problems on our Main Street,” Gillian pointed out.
In preparation for the painting project, a ‘power washing’ day will be held shortly and the Association is inviting everyone with a power washer to come along and help out with the general preparation work on all the houses on Main Street as they will all need a good clean before the painting work can commence.
Meanwhile, children from Daingean’s Youth Club approached RTE’s ‘Dirty Old Towns’ and the town’s regeneration project has engaged their interest with the crew expected to be on hand to film the painting of the main street over the weekend of March 24 and 25 next.
