Colin Dunne remembered at Barcelona Marathon

A FITTING tribute was paid to the memory of the late Colin Dunne who tragically died while running the 2009 Barcelona Marathon at this year's event.

A group of twenty five people including Colin's family, friends and team-mates travelled to Catalonian city to be at this year's event.

The marathon organisers made an emotional presentation at the conclusion of the race to his parents Tom and Bernie, his sister Ciara and his fiancee Yvonne Kearney.

They were joined on the winners podium by Colin's team-mates Cormac Minnock, Finian Minnock, Anthony Condron, Ger Keyes, Damien Minnock and K/K hurler Niall Leavy who all ran the marathon to raise funds to provide a defibrillator for the community.

The community of Mucklagh and Rahan and the county as a whole was shocked by the sudden death of the very popular sportsman.

He was captain of the Shamrocks GAA Club senior hurling and football teams and was a dedicated teacher at Killeigh National School where he trained the school teams and was hugely popular with the children.

His dedication to, and love of, sport has been fittingly commemorated with the setting up of the 'Colin Dunne School of Hurling' which began its work this week giving young hurlers in the north of the county the chance to hone and develop their skills.

Colin himself proudly represented Offaly at minor and U-21 level in hurling while he also won a number of medals with his club Shamrocks in both codes.

Details were also announced of 'The Colin Dunne Golf Classic' which will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 2 and 3 at Esker Hills Golf Club. The Dunne family is donating a cup.
