Close shave as Gardaí raise €5,000 for Irish Cancer Society

THERE wasn't a dreaded hairdryer in sight as members of Tullamore's Garda Traffic Corps Unit shaved their heads for a good cause!

It was certainly a case of 'hair you see it, now you don't' (and we're not referring to speeding motorists!) at Eugene's Bar last Thursday night as the Garda bravely participated in the Today FM organised Shave or Dye in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

Men and women throughout the country chose to either shave or dye their hair for the worthy cause.

Sgt Pascal Hanrahan and fellow Traffic Corps members, Garda's Kieran Fitzpatrick, Seamus Cullinan, Tom Geoghegan, Finbar Leahy, Jude Doyle, PJ McHugh, Mark Kenny, Paddy McGee and Kieran McConnell all lost their hair to gain funds for the charity.

Not to be outdone, female members of staff also played their role. While Garda's Anne Cullinane and Denise Scully had temporary hair extensions applied and Garda Olga Gorman went one step further and temporarily dyed her hair pink.

A packed Eugene's bar watched on as barbers from Tommy Clarke's Barbers left the member's hairless.

The Garda were rewarded for their efforts, raising a massive €5,000 from the event. Although this is the first year of the event, a Garda representative said it was such a huge success that it may become an annual undertaking.

Today FM's Shave or Dye saw its presenters shaving their heads or dyeing their hair to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society.

The funds raised will go towards cancer patient care services and cancer research.

Each year in Ireland, almost 28,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed, resulting in over 7,800 deaths. Cancer related illness accounts for almost one quarter of the annual death toll in Ireland.

Today FM set themselves the goal of raising €200,000 to help great work of the Irish Cancer Society in cancer research and care.
