American Ambassador Dan Rooney to attend Chamber Ball

AMERICAN Ambassador to Ireland Dan Rooney will attend the Midlands Gateway Chamber Ambassadors Ball on Friday week, May 21.

Ambassador Rooney was sworn in as US Ambassador to Ireland on July 1 2009. Well known in Ireland as one of the founders of the American Ireland Funds, Ambassador Rooney has also funded the annual Rooney Prize for Irish Literature to highlight the work of the Irish writers under the age of 40.

In February 2000, Ambassador Rooney, who owns the Pittsburgh Steelers American Football franchise, was recognised by the prestigious Maswell Football Club in Philadelphia by presenting with the Francis "Reds" Bagnell Award for "contributions to the game of football".

Ambassador Rooney's family is originally from Newry in County Down and he has been a regular visitor to Ireland for most of his life.

Speaking about the announcement Dominic Doheny, President of the Midlands Gateway Chamber said Ambassador Rooney has had a colourful and interesting business career spanning five decades.

"His story is one of interest particularly in a sporting context. Local people will probably know Tom Furlong was born in the site where the Tullamore Court Hotel is built. Tom left Ireland for the US and played American Football with the New York Giants where he was the highest paid kicker for a number of years!

"He later went on to play for the Atlantic Falcons. Numerous other people left Tullamore for the shores of the US and took up roots in Pittsburg. It is particularly fitting that Ambassador Rooney will be speaking in the Tullamore Court Hotel," said Mr Doheny.

Ambassador Rooney will be joined by An Taoiseach Brian Cowen at the Ambassadors Ball as well as the Head of Google Ad Operations for Ireland and Europe Ronan Harris.

Some tickets are still available for this prestigious networking event by calling Karen Cunningham on 087 948 0007. The Ambassadors Ball takes place on May 21 from 7pm in the Tullamore Court Hotel.
