A celebration of Traveller Culture

A range of exhibitions, documentaries, crafts and workshops are taking place this week to celebrate Traveller Culture in Offaly.

From an exhibition entitled By Ourselves, of family photos of Travellers in Offaly to a specially commissioned audio documentary Take the Reins by Ann-Marie Kelly along with films and a series of skills.

All events are free at the Offaly Traveller Movement in Bury Quay, the Kilbride Park area adjacent to the offices and craft displays can be seen on Canal Barge 107B which will be moored on the jetty beside Kilbride Park.

The film Southpaw (Francis Barrett the first Traveller to represent Ireland in the Olympics in 1998) will also be of interested to many especially with the Olympics on the horizon. Those interested in the skills of farriers, tent and sulky making can participate in workshops and displays in Kilbride Park.

This project has been made possible by funding from the Department of Justice through Offaly County Development Board, Offaly Local Development Company, the Community Enterprise and Economic Development Section of Offaly County Council, the Arts Office and the HSE. In-kind support was provided to the project from the Offaly Traveller Movement. The project has been coordinated by Offaly County Council, Offaly Traveller Movement and OLDC
