Anticipation mounts for Daingean Homecoming Festival

THE Daingean Homecoming Festival is one of the most anticipated annual events in the midlands. It boasts an impressive list of activities - one of the most popular being the Bumper Canal Day.

THE Daingean Homecoming Festival is one of the most anticipated annual events in the midlands. It boasts an impressive list of activities - one of the most popular being the Bumper Canal Day.

There are also many other events which include the parade, traditional threshing, karaoke competition and the Field Day. During the Daingean Homecoming Festival a Festival Queen is selected by a panel of judges. The Festival Queen selection is made in a similar style to the Rose of Tralee.

The schedule for this year’s Daingean Festival

Wednesday July 27 - Short film screenings 2011 - Taispeantais Gearrscannain 2011 - local filmakers showcased - “The moment” by Paddy Slattery, Wayne Brennan; “Moving Me” by Lorcan Dunne and many more from filmakers from Offaly, Kildare & Laois. Venue Seery’s Pub at 9pm.

Young at Art is a group of local women who will be displaying their paintings in Daingean Library from Wednesday July 27 and for the duration of Daingean Homecoming Festival. All welcome.

Thursday July 28 - Back by popular demand - Final of Karoke competition in The Blackthorn Pub, Main Street Daingean from 9.30pm;

Daingean Bingo 8.30pm - Town Hall, Daingean.

Friday July 29 - 6pm music in the town square by DJ Stephen Keogh;

7.30pm Daingean Homecoming Festival 5km road race, now a premier meeting on the Irish Road Race calendar

9.00pm music in the square by DJ, Jason Redding and DJ O’Connor;

The Thorny Rose competition (venue to be confirmed).

Saturday July 30 - 11am go-kart racing (helmets must be worn);

12 noon Town Square art competition and face painting and clay model painting;

12.30pm Daingean Festival Treasure Hunt;

Market stalls galore;

Daingean Festival Fashion show (sponsored by Ryan’s Pharmacy) - Town Hall where the 2011 Festival Queen will be chosen, fashions for everyone, doors open at 7pm show will start at 8pm sharp, 10 euro entry fee ... comperes - Martina McGlynn/Anne Corcoran;

Sunday July 31 - Ballycommon events 5.30pm - 9pm: Trad music, novice fishing, novelty water sports, exhibition on Canal Boat 107B, Ceol & Damhsa Ballycommon House at 9.30pm. The 107B barge will be leaving the Canal Bank at Daingean earlier in the day and making its way to Ballycommon, guest driver will be Daingean man Paddy Galvin.

Daingean Town Hall at 1pm - band stand (dignitaries and MC - Martin Goulding);

1.30pm opening of parade by 2011 Festival Queen and local author Geraldine O’Neill Brosnahan and Patrick Moore, gold medalist 5 aside soccer at the Special Olympics in Athens 2011;

3pm Machinery display and threshing with Willie Pilkington at the canal;

3pm - Field day at Daingean GAA pitch - races, stalls, best dressed lady/man, best dressed granny/grandad, children’s fancy dress of children’s favourite book character, bouncing castles/slides, dog show comp, formula 1 racing, bonny baby competition, and lots lots more....

Monday August 1

Bumper canal day and canal races - 1 pm - bowls, horse shoe throwing, throw the wellie;

3pm - raft race, rowing club demonstration.

4.30pm - tug o war.

Pig roasting on the spit in the Town Square from 10am - served at 6pm - music in the Square by various bands;

6pm - 9pm: serving of the roast pig in the Town Square with music on the Band Stand.
