Daingean Festival powers ahead

The Daingean Homecoming Festival will take place from Thursday, July 31 to Monday, August 4 and Festival chairman Paul McDonagh says it will be another bumper festival.

The Daingean Homecoming Festival will take place from Thursday, July 31 to Monday, August 4 and Festival chairman Paul McDonagh says it will be another bumper festival.

Despite getting off to a bumpy start, the festival committee have put together a super program. On Thursday, evening a table quiz will take place in Castle Barna Golf Club hosted by Naomh Molaoise. Daingean Library and Seery’s will host the short films and the town hall will host bingo.

Friday will see the ever popular road race with participants from all around the country taking part. This is a premier road race and this year is a very special race as Daingean’s running club take over the reins of organizing the venue from the Tullamore Harriers running club who have organised the event for many years now. The committee would like to tank the Harriers on behalf of the people of Daingean. The ever popular Barman’s Race will take place before the main event, with music and entertainment in the town square after the race.

Hosted by Daingean Youth Club, Saturday will see activities in the town hall and on the canal bank. Eoin Mangan will be organising the go-cart racing which will take place at the school grounds. The treasure hunt, street art, and face painting will be in and around the town hall with a junior disco from 4 to 7pm (under 14 accompanied.)

Edenderry Fit squad gym are promising a demonstration that will make you loose weight just looking at them.

A history trail will be part of the activities on Saturday with Emma Darcy from The Blackthorn offering refreshments to the participants .

Sunday will have a bumper field day hosted by Naomh Molaoise starting with the parade and the official opening by Councillor Martin O’Reilly. Businesess are being asked to enter into the parade even if its just one van while the vintage club will be out in full swing.

Naomh Molaoise are promising a bumper field day with lots of activities, including a boys and girls under age match followed by a mothers Gaelic match.

With highlights such as burger eating competition, fastest washing hanging, Glamorous Granny, a potato pealing contest organised by Sara Evens and lots more.

Monday will be hosted by Grand Canal Adventures with the raft race, power-balling and lots of new attractions Monday will be a great family day.

Each year the festival has a twist. This year we will have Daingean’s newest addition the playground, adding to the activities on the canal.
