Largest radio telescope to be built at Birr Castle

A new €3 million telescope, set to be built at Birr Castle, would be the largest radio telescope in the world.

A new €3 million telescope, set to be built at Birr Castle, would be the largest radio telescope in the world.

Last week Dermot Desmond agreed to partially fund the telescope, leaving those behind it with a shortfall to reach the €1.2 million needed to build the project.

The telescope will represent the largest amount spent on astronomical equipment in Ireland since the Great Leviathan Telescope, located at the castle and built by William Parsons in the 1840’s, which held the title of the world’s largest telescope until the 1920’s.

Marketing Manager with Mid Ireland Tourism Peter Ormond said they would be working very closely with Birr Castle to promote what they have to offer.

He urged all bodies involved in tourism in the area to invest in the project and promote Birr.
