St Mary’s Youth & Community Centre are seeking young people to take part in one of the most ambitious theatrical productions ever to be attempted in Tullamore when they stage Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats in November.

Cats, which is based on a book by TS Eliot, ran for 21 years in London’s West End and for 18 years on Broadway (2nd only to Phantom of the Opera). Two of the most famous songs are Memory and McCavity the Wonder Cat.

If you have been fortunate enough to have heard Elaine Paige singing Memory from the musical then you will know what to expect, if on the other hand you have not had this pleasure then it is something to look forward to.

Check out the videos on You Tube to see the fantastic costumes and hear the musical hits from the show. Cats is essentially a show for young people and throughout the world the cast have been predominately young adults.

With characters like McCavity, Deuteronomy, Mungojerrie, Rum Tum Tugger, Jennyanddots, Bombalurina, Grizabella who sings memory and many other fantastical names makes being part of the production such an enjoyable experience. So not alone do we need to find McCavity but all the other cats as well and we need your help to do so.

Normally the Centre does not go into production until September but because of the enormity of the undertaking and to ensure the best possible production, rehearsals will start early in June. Also our productions generally run for 3 nights but this production is scheduled to run for 5 or 6 performances at least.

Cats will be staged during the week of November 12.

Enrolment for the production will take place on Saturday, June 9 at 3pm for Post primary cast members and on Sunday, June 10 at 3pm for primary school cast members from 2nd class upwards.

The main roles will not be offered to primary school children except in very exceptional circumstances as the November production is traditionally a senior production.

They are also looking to fill a 16 piece orchestra and in keeping with the policy of working with young people we are seeking applications from anyone interested in being part of this production. The orchestra will be conducted and led by Ciaran Gilligan.
