INDEPENDENT Labour General Election candidate Liam Dumpleton is calling for pig farmers to receive a fairer price for their produce.
Mr Dumpleton said farmers and their families across Laois/Offaly are being “abandoned”.
“The sector’s future is being put at risk because there is very little incentive for the next generation to continue operating in the agricultural field. I have spoken with farmers in Laois/Offaly and one of the major problems being highlighted is the price pig farmers are receiving for their produce. They are earning around n1.34 per kilo which means they’re getting only 17 per cent of the shelf price. Combine this with the increase in cereal prices and the future for the Irish pig sector is looking very bleak.”
He said it is very difficult for pig farmers to go up against multi-national retailers and demand an increase in their share of the profits and he believes that the only way forward is for progressive communication between producers, processors and retailers.”
