Midlands Simon Community extends its services to meet increasing demand

During 2012 Midlands Simon Community reported that it worked with over 100 people each day of the year through its services which operate across the four midlands counties of Laois, Longford, Offaly and Westmeath.

During 2012 Midlands Simon Community reported that it worked with over 100 people each day of the year through its services which operate across the four midlands counties of Laois, Longford, Offaly and Westmeath.

Tony O’Riordan CEO Midlands Simon Community commented, “Life often presents people with challenges and difficulties that they did not expect, which can be extremely difficult to overcome. Midlands Simon Community is here to face these challenges with all those who need our help, and by working together, for as long as it takes, we can overcome these challenges by providing direct targeted services to those experiencing homelessness. We could not provide these essential supports without the generosity of the communities where we provide operate and for this we are extremely grateful.”

Increase to Services Provided by Midlands Simon include and Emergency Accommodation Service. In 2012 Midlands Simons doubled the number of emergency accommodation beds operated in the region by opening a new service in Tullamore which provides 6 emergency beds on 24/7 basis in addition to a 6 bed emergency accommodation service based in Athlone. In total Midlands Simon provided 47 people with emergency accommodation in 2012.

Midlands Simon also received 103 referrals to its regional settlement service in 2012. This service works with people who are at risk and/or who are experiencing homelessness. The service helps individuals to Find accommodation, Move into their new home, Maintain their new home

Tony O’Riordan (CEO of Midlands Simon Community) on reviewing the progress made in 2012 stated that there is a growing demand for Midlands Simon services.

He added, “thankfully with the support of the community and our volunteers we were able to reach out to those who need us most. We face considerable challenges to raise the necessary funds to maintain services with the continued goodwill of the Local Authorities the HSE and the community we will continue to be able to support people to move from the insecurity of homelessness to the security of having a home of their own.”
