AT the Edenderry Area Meeting last week Cllr Eddie Fitzpatrick raised the issue of illegal parking by travelling families. Cllr Fitzpatrick outlined the issues and problems surrounding caravans being parked illegally.
“Their are two towns in particular where this issue has now become a huge problem over the last number of years those being Portarlington and Edenderry,” said Cllr Fitzpatrick.
“The Portarlington situation has been ongoing with caravans parked on the edge of the main road and this is causing huge concern for motorists using this route to the school in the mornings and evenings. Cars actually have to stop as members of the travelling family could be sitting on the road.”
Cllr Fitzpatrick is very annoyed about the issue of proper toilet facilities and washing and says there seems to be one rule for travellers and another for settled families in this regard.
Edenderry has the same problem in the Downshire area where a number of caravans are parked on the footpath which appears to be private property.“This is not acceptable as the general public have to walk by these everyday.”
“The Government needs to change legislation whereby the local authority would have more power to move these people to proper facilities - let that be transient or residential halting sites. At the moment their seems to be no law in this regard,” concluded Cllr Fitzpatrick.
