DARREN Hanniffy and Ronan Scully have been announced as the joint winners 2010 Offaly Person of the Year by the Offaly Association, Dublin.

Ronan from Clara and Birr native Darren scooped the award in recognition of the tremendous charity and humanitarian work they have done to assist some of the world’s worst disaster hit areas.

Both Darren and Ronan initially came to prominence as talented hurling and football stars representing Offaly and fittingly it is their prominent work for the humanitarian agency ‘Goal’ that has won them huge admiration.

“Yet again there was a very strong list of nominees for the 2010 Offaly Person of the Year award,” explained Offaly Association Chairperson Martin Delaney, “There are some outstanding people doing wonderful work in Offaly and beyond. Both men are most worthy winners.”

Darren and Ronan become the 24th winners of the award since the scheme was initiated by the Offaly Association, Dublin in 1988 when former GAA President John Dowling (RIP) was the inaugural winner.

As 2010 winners, Darren and Ronan succeed last year’s winner Shane Lowry who shot to golf stardom with his stunning win at the 2009 Irish Open.

The person of the year award, which is kindly sponsored by Coolderry native Noel Tynan of the Celt Lodge Bar and Guesthouse on Talbot St, Dublin, will be presented at the Offaly Association’s annual dinner dance in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin on April 2 next.
