A TULLAMORE solicitor has taken over the reins as the county’s State Solicitor this week.

John Hughes, of Hughes Kehoe & Co, was appointed as the State Solicitor of Offaly, effective from January 1 last after the position was vacated by Birr based solicitor, James Houlihan on December 31, 2011. It is thought that it will be first time that the State Solicitor will be based in Tullamore in a long number of years.

Mr Hughes, a Tullamore native, began his studies in Dublin City University in 1990 and continued onto to graduate from UCG in 1993 after which he completed his apprenticeship with J.A Shaw, Mullingar.

The Tullamore solicitor then went onto work with Mr Houlihan in his Birr based practice in 1996 before setting up his own practice in 1998 in Tullamore and this is where he continues to currently work with his wife, Maura.

Mr Hughes said he was proud to have been appointed to the privileged and prestigious position and was looking forward to continuing his work in the courts.
