GARDAI in Tullamore are seeking the public's assistance in relation to an armed burglary on a shop in Clonbullogue last weekend.

One raider wearing a Balaclava and brandishing a sawn off shot gun entered the premises and took a small amount of cast. Gardai are appealing to witnesses who may have noticed suspicious activity in the village on Saturday evening to contact them in confidence on 057 93 27600.

Meanwhile Gardai said thefts of copper are significantly on the rise. Clonaslee GAA Club was the latest target with thieves breaking in over the weekend and stealing copper from the clubhouse changing rooms.

Gardai said houses under construction are also being pilfered for copper. They are asking people to be vigilant in terms of sheds and farm stores as these too have come under attack from copper thieves.

Gardai are also warning people to exercise extreme care to secure their premises as burglaries in general are on the rise with a number taking place last week across the area. They said these are opportunistic criminals who will take every chance to burgle a premises.
