Saffrons downed by Faithful girls

THE Offaly U-16 Camogie recorded their first win in the All Ireland U-16B Championship with a fine five point win away to Antrim on Saturday.

The team left Birr at 7.30am that morning but the early start did not affect them as they saw off an Antrim team brim full of confidence after seeing off Armagh by 36 points in the first round.

However the Saffrons were not going to have it so easy on Saturday as they were caught cold by the visitors in the early exchanges with Offaly putting 1-2 on the board in the opening 12 minutes before Antrim had a score on the borad.

A young Offaly team had lost their opening game against Limerick but playing with the wind on Saturday, they piled on the pressure and went to the break leading by 3-6 to 0-2 with Christine Cleary and Mairead Jennings (2) the goalscorers.

Antrim battled back strongly after the break and were right back in contention thanks to Niamh Adams and Ursula McCotter.

However with the game hanging in the balance, the Offaly girls dug deep and Cailín Fitzgerald got in to score a goal that gave Offaly some much needed breathing space. Antrim threw everything into the attack in the closing stages but some wonderful defence and tight marking saw Offaly come away deserving winners on the day.

Offaly now take on Armagh on home grounds on April 2 and a win here could see them in the All-Ireland semi final.
