The Offaly Senior Footballers are the brink of relegation back to Division 4 after suffering their fifth defeat in six league games.
Offaly 1-12
Sligo 1-14
Seven points adrift at half-time after playing against the wind, Offaly briefly threatened a revival in the second-half when Bernard Allen blasted to the back of the net after good work from Niall McNamee.
Unfortunately for Offaly, they never really got much momentum going and they went 20 minutes without scoring with the wind at their backs.
In the final ten minutes Offaly did add another five points but Sligo hit two of their own which was just enough to see Kevin Walsh’s side over the line. The result secures their position in Division 3 for next year and takes the pressure off ahead of their last game against Roscommon.
For Offaly the pressure is very much on and even a win in their last game against Tipperary may not be enough to save them as they also need Antrim to defeat Cavan in Breffni Park.
See this Tuesday’s Offaly Express for full report and reaction from Offaly manager Gerry Cooney.
