Offaly 3-6

Westmeath 0-7

With both sides without the services of several potential starters, the Offaly supporters in O’Connor Park last Sunday would have gone home cautiously optimistic for the all important league campaign ahead.

Chief amongst the reasons to be cheerful was the strong performance of Alan Mulhall at full-forward. A goalkeeper for the county for the last two seasons, the Walsh Island man was in a more familiar attacking role on Sunday. He had a hand in a number of Offaly’s scores using his size and strength to win possession before scoring himself or intelligently finding a better placed team-mate.

His power was complimented by the pace of Willie Mulhall and Ken Casey and between them the trio in the starting full-forward line accounted for 3-4 of their side’s total.
