The group stages of the Tullamore Court Hotel Offaly Senior Football Championship finally came to a conclusion last weekend with the fifth round of group games.

Most of the games went as expected as there was little to play for for most teams with the thrilling game between Tubber and Ferbane in Group 2 being the only exception.

A point with the last kick of the game from the evergreen and ever reliable Ciara McManus sealed an amazing comeback and the win for Tubber and they moved up to fourth in the group sealing a quarter-final place. Ferbane will now have to fight it out in the relegation play-off by as they finished fifth in the group by two points on score difference. Ferbane had led by six points at half-time but Tubber clawed their way back and McManus’ late point sealed a 1-13 to 2-9 win.

Elsewhere in Group 2, Rhode crushed Walsh Island last weekend to claim top spot in Group 2 of the Tullamore Court Hotel Offaly Senior Football Championship.

The defending champions scored an incredible 7-23 while only conceding 1-5 to emphatically secure top spot while Wlash Island finsih bottom of the table.

The third game in Group 2 ended with a win for Tullamore over Gracefield which left Tullamore in second in the group and Gracefield in third.

Clara topped the pile in Group 1 with five wins from five games after a 2-16 to 1-10 win over St Brigid’s. There was little to chose between the sides in the first-half but Clara eased away after the restart to record a nine point win. The result leaves St Brigid’s in fifth and in the relegation play-offs.

They will be joined there by Erin Rovers who lost out by 2-11 to 0-9 against St Rynagh’s. Leading by 1-8 to 0-3 at half-time thanks to a Gary Mahon goal, St Rynagh’s closed out the game in the second-half with Joe Carroll adding the second goal after 45 minutes. That moved St Rynagh’s up to fourth in the group but their reward is a quarter-final against Rhode.

The battle for second and third was between Edenderry and Ballycumber but on the day the men from North Offaly were too strong and they cruised to a 0-16 to 0-6 win. The 2011 champions finish second in the group place with Ballycumber in third.
