Midfielder Arlene Watkins was the star of the show as she scored a total of 1-8 with 1-6 coming from play. Defensively captain Sheila Sullivan led a back-line that restricted Naomh Brid’s scoring chances while the pace of Mairead Jennings caused constant problems for the Naomh Brid backs.

All Star nominee Tina Hannon was outstanding for Naomh Brid with Marcella Moloney having a fine game at full-back and captain Caroline Greed putting in a strong performance in midfield.

Playing against the wind in the first-half, Arlene Watkins and Dawn Whelehan added early points for Birr before Tina Hannon opened Naomh Brid’s account.

A fortunate goal from Rebecca Hoctor extended Birr’s lead and the teams added two points apiece in the next six minutes to leave Birr 1-5 to 0-3 ahead after 15 minutes.

Four points in a row from Birr left nine points between the sides but Naomh Brid pegged them back before the break with two points from Caroline Green and they could have been closer but Audrey Kennedy in the Birr goal saved a well struck penalty from Tina Hannon.

Leading by 1-9 to 0-5 at the break, Birr pulled away with the wind at their backs in the second-half. They got the perfect start to the half with a goal from Mairead Jennings which was followed by two points from Arlene Watkins to put twelve between the sides.

A goal from Dawn Whelehan and points from Watkins and Julie Stephens all but finished the game as a contest with Watkins adding another 1-1 before the final whistle.

Naomh Brid never threw in the towel and they were rewarded with a late goal from Valerie Maher and two more points from Tina Hannon but Birr rounded off the scoring through Julie Stephens to claim the Intermediate title.
