A week after their footballing counterparts recorded a facile 8-30 to 1-0 win over Kilkenny in the first round of the Leinster Football Championship, the Offaly minor hurlers face a far tougher challenge when they take to the field to start their season this Saturday.

Goalkeeper Conor Clancy will start in goals for the hurlers after playing in goals for the footballers last Friday.

Neither side took part in the Leinster League but both have played numerous challenge matches in preparation for the Championship.

Offaly have struggled to make an impact at minor level in recent years. Last year they were eventually knocked out by Westmeath in the quarter-final stage by 1-14 to 0-9 having lost to Wexford by 3-13 to 3-10 in a high scoring first round game.

There is a doubt over Cillian Kiely who is one of a number of starters who will be minor again next year. Ethan Mannion and Colm Daly will miss the game through injury.

Originally fixed for 7pm, the game will now throw in at 2pm in O’Connor Park.
