OFFALY Ladies claimed their second win in this year’s National Football League, with a very good performance against Derry in Ballinagar on Sunday.

With a very strong wind against them in the first half the Offaly girls put on a fine display, putting 2-4 on the score board. They could have had a few more scores up but for the fine saves pulled off by the Derry keeper when on numerous occasion Sinead Taylor blasted shots on the Derry goal.

Derry had a few chances in the first half but great work by the full back line in particular full back Patrice Stapleton kept the Derry score to just four points.

With good possession the Offaly girls put the pressure on and with two fine goals from Mairead Kavanagh and Therese Hickey and a brace of points each from Kym Furey and Bernie Walsh the half time score was 2-4 to 0-4 in Offaly’s favour.

At the interval a few substitutions were made with SarahO’Rourke replacing Bernie Walsh and Deirdre Evans replacing Patrice Stapleton.

The Offaly girls started the second half very well with two great points from Kym Furey. Kym was on the score sheet again when she latched onto a fine pass from Sarah O’Rourke and, in her usual style, left the ball in the back of the Derry net.

Five well taken points were to follow from the boots of Mairead Kavanagh, Orlaigh Heavey, Sarah O’Rourke and Naimh Daly. The Derry girls didn’t give up though and kept fighting to the end putting 1-2 on the scoreboard in the second half. A good save from goalkeeper Miriam Malone left the final score at 3-11 to 1-6 in Offaly’s favour.

This was a good day for the Offaly girls and their confidence is growing with every game they play.

The Offaly Ladies have a bye in this weekend’s National League, but are not free from football as all girls will be out with their clubs as they kick off the first round of the league.

They return in two weeks time when they face tough opponents and neighbours Westmeath. The County Board would like to thank Ballinagar for the use of their fine facilities and for the food after the game. Good luck to all clubs in the league.
