However the win did not come easy as St Mary’s had to overcome the concession of 1-1 in the early going before taking control to run out seven point winners.

After the Dublin side went in front with a point from Shane Carthy and a goal from distance from Eoin Shiels, St Mary’s settled to their task and set about overhauling the lead which they did in spectacular fashion.

Any hopes Portmarnock may have harboured of causing an upset were dashed in a ten minute blitz which produced three goals for the Edenderry school.

Peter Connolly was the first to find the back of the net and that was quickly followed by goals from Oran Lawton and Daniel Pyke.

That put St Mary’s 3-1 to 1-2 up at the break and while scores were harder to come by in the second-half, St Mary’s never looked like losing the lead.

Defensively they were rock solid allowing only two points in the second-half while adding four at the other end.

It has been a very busy start to 2013 for St Mary’s manager Emmett McDonnell who has also started to turn things around for the Offaly Senior Footballers who performed very well in the O’Byrne Cup.

His workload won’t lessen any time soon as his side prepare for a quarter-final against Athlone CC. The winners of that game will play the winners of Marist Athlone and Knockbeg in the semi-final. The quarter-finals are fixed for February 9.
