ST Mary’s overcame dense fog and a heavy field to advance past Marist with relative ease in the first round of the Leinster Colleges Senior A Football Championship last week.

St Mary’s 1-11

Marist, Athlone 1-6

The Offaly side trailed for the majority of the first half after conceeding an unfortunate early goal but a scoring burst of 1-2 before half-time gave them the lead which they never looked like losing in the second-half.

Lead by Conor McNamee, who was a defensive rock in the first-half and a midfield dynamo in the second, St Mary’s took advantage of the fact their opponents played with a sweeper by defending stoutly and then moving forward at pace.
