DESPITE a plea that the club be allowed stay up on ‘compassionate grounds’ Shamrocks will play their football in the Intermediate Championship in 2012.

Shamrocks lost in the relegation final this year at the hands of Ballycumber but there had been hope of a reprieve when Rhode won the Intermedaite Championship. Rhode could not gain promotion as they already have a senior team.

Shamrocks argued at length that they should be allowed to remain in senior however they were informed that this was not possible as the championship was completed and they were now an Intermediate team. It was also pointed out that they had no greater claim to a place in senior than any of other 12 teams at the grade.

Next year’s Senior Football Championship therefore will have 11 teams while there will be 13 in Intermediate. measures were put in place to avoid a repeat of that scenario in future years and the numbers will be balanced for 2012 with no relegation from Senior next year.
