A late scoring charge from Galway ended Offaly’s hope of reaching the Walsh Cup Final as they suffered a one point defeat to the Tribesmen in O’Connor Park last Sunday.
Walsh Cup Hurling semi-final
Brian Whelehan’s charges were ahead by as many as seven in the second-half and were 0-7 to 0-5 ahead at the break with Seir Kieran’s Joe Bergin accounting for four of Offaly’s scores.
Both goalkeepers were in fine form making a number of saves with Colm Callanan denying Joe Bergin while James Dempsey made a string of fine saves in the Offaly goal to keep his side in front.
The first goal came soon after the restart however when Kevin Connolly found the back of the net to give them a 1-8 to 0-5 lead.
That lead increased to 1-11 to 0-7 and at this stage Offaly looked to be on course for a victory and a place in the final against Kilkenny. Galway however clawed their way helped by a goal from a penalty from Niall Healy.
With the momentum now firmly on their side, Galway eased ahead and lead by 1-14 to 1-12 entering the closing stages. Offaly pulled back a late point through Joe Bergin but the final whistle went before they could get back on level terms.
