Claire O’Brien of Tullamore Ladies Football club was one of five recipients of the prestige Leinster Ladies Gaelic Football scholarship award winners for 2013.
Claire who is 19 is currently a second year student in Dublin City University (DCU). She commenced playing football with Tullamore when the club was reformed in 2004 and was a member of the team that won the U-12B championship that year. The following year she captained the club to its first ‘A’ title, when Tullamore won the U-12A championship.
In 2006 Claire was a central figure in a very successful Tullamore team that won the U-14A championship, the All Ireland under 14 Feile Championship Division 3 and also the All Ireland Sevens Plate competition.
In 2007 she was a member of the team that retained the U-14A championship and also won an International Feile competition held in Birmingham where she was runners-up in the skills competition. Claire was also part of Tullamore teams that won championships in U-16B in 2008, and U-18B, scoring the winning point, and also the Junior Championship in 2009.
Claire has represented Offaly at every grade from U-12 up to adult level and is currently part of Greg Farrelly’s 2013 County setup. She is also plying her trade with DCU and was a member of both the Division 1 League O’Rourke Cup and the Division 2 League Curran Cup All-Ireland winning teams, the finals of which took place before Christmas. Claire is currently training with the DCU O’Connor Cup team (Sigerson for Ladies) and Offaly Ladies in preparation for this year’s forthcoming championships.
